Race Car Driver Chris Osborn Takes a Win at Norwalk for PAC Racing

September 9, 2019 By Carrie Buatti

This past week our own Chris Osborn, Corporate Project Engineering Manager and the face of PAC Racing, won his second Wally Trophy at the rain delayed Norwalk, Ohio National NHRA event in the 2019 Top Sportsman class.  This is Chris’ first Wally in his new 1969 Camaro which he spent the entire off season, and then some, building from the ground up.  The hard work paid off in only his fifth event this year as he set a new Personal Record (PR) covering the quarter mile in 6.69 seconds with a top speed of 207.3 miles per hour!

Chris’ passion for the sport and the engineering challenges it presents makes him a true ambassador for PAC racing, Peterson Spring and its customers. Chris would like to thank Peterson Spring and PAC Racing for their support.

PAC Racing Spring’s Chris Osborn Goes To The Winner’s Circle In The NHRA Central Division Race

July 28, 2016 By Carrie Buatti

IMG_1059

Columbus, OH (July 24, 2016) –  PAC Racing Spring’s Chris Osborn took his six second, 200mph Top Sportsman PAC Racing Sponsored Drag Race Camaro to the winner’s circle in the NHRA Central Division Race.   Chris Qualified 11th in a tough field of competitors and drove the car through five rounds of eliminations to win his first ever major event victory.  CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS!

Chris stated, “This win is extremely exciting, gratifying and surreal!!!  After going to so many races and investing so much time and effort to get this car together, I thought we could win but not as quick as today.  I don’t think anything will remove this smile from my face for quite some time!   I want to thank PAC Racing Springs for supporting my racing endeavors and my crew (Angie Soroka,  Bonnie & Gairel Osborn) for working so hard on such a hot day.  This win would not have happened without them!”

The weekend was very brutal with 90+ degree weather, very high humidity and a greasy, slick track but Chris was able to adjust and make the right calls to come out on top each round.  The third round was very tough as Chris launched late on the Christmas tree but the car powered through to win by only 0.001 seconds or about three inches.  “Most race winners say you need a lucky round and that was it for me.” Chris stated.

The win vaulted Chris to a top 10 points position in the tough NHRA North Central Division with only two more division races this year.  “If we can make the remaining races and have everything come together like it did this weekend, we can make it to the top of that list!”

Chris is the General Manager/ Engineer for PAC Racing, and proudly uses the racing products made in PAC Racing’s Southfield, Michigan facility on his race car.  In addition to the thrill and the sport of racing, Chris uses his car to develop products and understand what the racer’s needs are in real world winning situations.

Peterson Spring Recovers Century Old Springs

May 17, 2010 By Austin Rosenberg

Peterson Spring learns of connection to the springs that were at the base of the huge smoke stacks of Detroit Edison’s “Seven Sisters” power generating plant across from Belle Isle on the Detroit River.
The Seven Sisters was a landmark for generations until it was imploded in the summer of 1996 after 81 years. Salvaged from the rubble were five mighty, hand-forged, hot-coiled springs made by August Peterson. Bob Umpfenbach, at one time an employee of Peterson Spring on Telegraph Road in Southfield, Michigan, made contact with the demolition crew and asked them to save some of Peterson’s springs. According to Bob, there were three sizes of springs, and he was promised samples of each size. Unfortunately, someone scrapped the others by mistake, leaving Peterson Spring only the smaller ones. At present, these are on display at the Peterson Spring Home Office in Southfield.
Bud Peterson recalled that as a child, his father would tell him and his sister, Thelma, that the springs at the base of the giant stacks of the power plant were handmade by their Grandfather, August. The compression springs August made were necessary in order to compensate for the expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes in the stacks. There were actually two or three compression springs in each unit, one nestled inside the other, for a combined weight of 51.25 pounds. “To make these springs,” explains Bud, “August took a bar of steel and got the ends red hot in a forge (which is a charcoal fire with bellows underneath), and then tapered the ends with hammer blows. After this was done, he heated the whole bar red hot in a furnace, took it out, and coiled it over an arbor on a big, heavy coiler he built himself. He was making these springs for the Seven Sisters Plant in 1914 when his first granddaughter, my sister Thelma, was born.”
The Detroit landmark was dubbed “Seven Sisters” because of its seven 325-foot-high stacks. It was officially retired in 1983 and imploded shortly after 9 o’clock in the morning on August 10th, 1996. When it was built, the plant required: 9,000 piles, 23,000 yards of concrete, and nearly 1,300 tons of reinforcing. The initial boiler was so large the Detroit Edison Chairman Alex Dow hosted a luncheon inside it in 1914. Each stack weighed about 1,286,000 pounds, and each was wide enough to allow two lanes of traffic. The DTE power plant was not completely demolished, the two other stacks, named Two Brothers, of the Conners Creek Power Plant are still operational, sitting on the Detroit River near Chrysler’s Jefferson North Plant.
Today, Peterson Spring carries on the family tradition of spring manufacturing through the precision coiling of compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs and die springs. The company offers a technical array of services from grinding to prototyping to sub-assemblies. This global supplier presents expertise in many industries including agriculture, industrial, automotive and motorsport.

2009 Christmas Toy Drive

November 19, 2009 By Austin Rosenberg

The holidays are upon us. Thanksgiving is next week and who can walk into a store without seeing the decorated trees, twinkling lights and shiny Christmas wrapping paper.  This year Peterson Spring has partnered with Lighthouse of Oakland County to bring a smile to a child at Christmastime by hosting a toy drive.

This has been a rough year as we all know economy wise. Many middle class families who have always had a roof over their heads, food on their tables and presents under their trees are facing a bleak Christmas this year.  Indeed having a home is essential and food as well but don’t underestimate the joy and smiles a simple toy can bring to a child on Christmas morning.  The toys do not have to be expensive…a coloring book, a box of crayons, a board game. Any and all will bring happiness to a child this year at Christmas.
All donations should be in by December 18, 2009.  If you would like to know more about Lighthouse of Oakland County please visit their website at: www.lighthouseoakland.org
